Are you passionate about mentoring students or have you competed for the John Locke Institute Essay Competition? We’re looking for mentors with strong subject expertise and a proven ability to guide students in crafting clear, original, and compelling arguments.
As a John Locke Essay Competition Tutor, you’ll work with ambitious students from around the world, helping them sharpen their critical thinking, refine their essay structure, and produce standout submissions for one of the most competitive international essay competitions.
WHAT YOU'LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:
Delivering high-quality, rigorous tutoring sessions for students preparing for John Locke competitions.
Customising guidance to each student’s skill level and competition goals, with a strong focus on building original arguments, critical thinking, and clarity of expression.
Using your competition experience to teach essay strategy, developing thesis statements, structuring arguments, engaging with counterarguments, and integrating evidence effectively across philosophy, politics, economics, or history.
Providing detailed, constructive feedback on drafts, helping students refine their ideas, strengthen their analysis, and elevate their writing to a competition-winning standard.
Supporting students through the full essay process - from brainstorming and question selection to outlining, drafting, and final polishing.
Maintaining consistent communication between sessions - tracking progress, setting writing milestones, and offering guidance on readings, research, and past winning essays.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
Strong expertise in one or more John Locke subject areas (e.g., philosophy, politics, economics, history, psychology, law, or theology), with excellent analytical and academic writing skills.
Experience with the John Locke Institute Essay Competition or similar high-level essay competitions: as a participant, tutor, or coach.
Master’s degree preferred; exceptional Bachelor’s graduates from Top 15 US / Top 10 UK universities may be considered.
Strong communication, organisation, and mentoring skills, with at least 10 hours of availability per week.
Proficient in additional languages is a plus
